The first monograph of Marieta Chirulescu (b. 1974 in Sibiu, Romania) has been published on the occasion of her solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel which took place from September to November 2010. In its shape, the artist book of the size Din A4 reminds one of a facsimile and is divided into four parts. The first part contains 20 black-and-white reproductions of photocopies, which the artist uses often as a preliminary stage to her abstract works on paper and canvas. Extensive texts by Mihaela Chiriac, art historian, and Adam Szymczyk, director of Kunsthalle Basel, form the second part of the publication. In the following part, excerpts of all the prints and paintings shown in the exhibition are presented in their original size (1:1). Only in the Index, the fourth part of the book, the works are fully depicted with image credits. In the texts and images, the book plays with proximity and distance and mirrors Chirulescu’s working process as well as the question towards an adequate form of a past exhibition.
The offset printed catalogue is also available as a special edition with additional 20 original black-and-white photocopies.
