Valentin Noujaïm’s (* 1991) cinematic work focuses on extinguished life trajectories and reflects on the complexity of power relations within French society. Through his engagement with anti-racist struggles and spatial imaginaries, he sheds light on experiences that have been marginalized by dominant historical and national narratives. The exhibition PANTHEON at Kunsthalle Basel presents the premiere of the final chapter of Noujaïm’s extensive trilogy La Défense. While induction into France’s national Panthéon represents a selective process, in this cinematic work Noujaïm focuses on the overlooked histories and suppressed voices that are equally part of French society, offering a counterpoint to official representation.
