Photographer Polly Brown, painter Austin Lee and graphic designer Philippe Karrer speak about their approach to this collaboration, its relationship to their practice and the paramount importance of humour. The conversation will be moderated by Rinny Biberstein, head of Bookshop of Kunsthalle Basel, in English.
SPHERES are close creative collaborations between an artist and the editor, Philippe Karrer. Each issue is dedicated to a young artist and his or her practice, functioning as an exploration of character, surroundings, everyday experiences, inspirations, and ideas. Through this constellation approach, and using unconventional and innovative formats, each publication offers a holistic understanding of the artist and his or her work. The focus lies on what is important to the artist during the time period of working together, thereby capturing the essence of the artist’s work at a particular moment. Each issue is both a document and an expression of the artist/designer collaboration.
Polly Brown, born 1988, is a British photographer based in London.
Philippe Karrer, born 1985, is a Swiss graphic and type designer working between London and Basel.
Austin Lee, born 1983, is an american painter and lives and works in New York.
