A staircase can be a lot of things. A crossroads, a meeting point, a place of conflict, a barrier or an obstacle on the way up. In the “Treppen” project, a group of people with a wide variety of disabilities is confronting this building. They meet at, in front of and on a staircase. With movement, language and further aids of the human everyday life some fundamental topics of the UN handicap right convention are pursued. Is it possible to leave the top and bottom behind? Can we, with or without disability, meet at the same level? Can we overcome these damn stairs and other barriers together?
The project is part of the parcours “Wer hat Recht(e)?”, in which the Wildwuchs Festival Basel has commissioned five collectives to question the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Switzerland by artistic means. The Wildwuchs Festival Basel will take place from 23 May to 2 June 2019. Founded in 2001 as one of the first inclusive festivals in Switzerland, the festival has established itself as an important voice in the Basel and Swiss festival landscape with its diverse artistic programme, its process-oriented approach, and its broad-based encounter programme.
The performance “Treppen” is open to the public. Please get in touch with wildwuchs.ch if you would like to participate in the parcours “Wer hat Recht(e)?”, or other events of the festival.
