Honoring David Hammons, Elena Filipovic (director and curator at Kunsthalle Basel) will present her new book and give a lecture (in English) about the notoriously elusive artist and how his sale of snowballs on the streets of New York City one winter day in 1983 became one of the most iconic gestures of a practice that has, since the 1960s, reflected on the nature of the artwork, the art world, and race in the US. The publication is part of the One Work series by Afterall Books, which focuses on single artworks – presented by single authors – that have significantly shaped the way we understand art and its history.
