Kunsthalle Basel presents at STADTKINO Basel on the occasion of the exhibition The Plural Present by Allyson Vieira:
Marat/Sade (1967) von Peter Brook
The movie was made by british director Peter Brook in 1967, based on the on the play of the german writer Peter Weiss The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade of 1964.
It is a drama play taking place in the French Revolution, contrasting the character Marat and Marquis de Sade, which have a different world view as well as a different idea of a state. Marat advocates for the welfare of the people and the revolution, while Sade already has lost hope. For him the detachment of the individual from society marks the only salvation.
