Why Look at Animals
The performance will feature a screening of a 1960s-era American educational documentary film about octopi, which will be accompanied by a reading of short stories written by artist Pedro Barateiro. The title of the performance is adapted from the 1977 essay “Why Look at Animals?” by English novelist and art critic John Berger. In the essay, Berger analyses the alienation of humans from animals as a consequence of nineteenth-century capitalism, and contrasts it with an earlier period when human-animal relations were more integrated. The performance text, written specifically to accompany the educational film images, will be read live by the artist and by American poet and art critic Quinn Latimer.
