Verschlüsselte Netzwerke, digitale Währungen, künstliche Intelligenz, das Sammeln persönlicher Daten, diskriminierende Algorithmen und „empfindsame Maschinen“: Sie alle sind Produkte des datenbasierten Kapitalismus des 21. Jahrhunderts. Der rasante Anstieg von Informationen und die undurchsichtigen Formen des Zirkulierens und Verarbeitens von Daten prägen unsere Existenz heutzutage grundlegend. INFORMATION (Today) ist eine Gruppenausstellung mit Künstler*innen, die genau dieses Phänomen enträtseln wollen.
Als lose Reaktion auf die legendäre, von Kynaston L. McShine kuratierte Ausstellung INFORMATION, die 1970 im New Yorker Museum of Modern Art stattfand, untersucht INFORMATION (Today), wie zeitgenössische Künstler*innen mit dem unerbittlichen Strom an Informationen und Daten umgehen, welcher die Gegenwart formt. Diese MoMA-Ausstellung entspringt den späten 1960er- und frühen 1970er-Jahren, geboren in der Dämmerung des «Informationszeitalters», zu einem Zeitpunkt als der Fortschritt der Computer- und Kommunikationstechnik – und damit der Zugang zu Informationen – sich im plötzlichen Aufschwung befand. Und, in den über fünfzig Jahren, die seither vergangen sind, verführte die allgegenwärtige Möglichkeit von Zugriff und Konnektivität zu einer Nachlässigkeit gegenüber ihren Schattenseiten: den immer stärker technisierten Formen von Überwachung und der extremen Exponiertheit von persönlichen Daten. Erforscht man die unzähligen Arten und Weisen wie Information unsere «postfaktische» Ära charakterisiert, dann erscheint eine solche Ausstellung dringlicher denn je.
INFORMATION (Today) zeigt eine Auswahl an internationalen Künstler*innen aus den zwei Generationen nach 1970 – also nach der ursprünglichen INFORMATION-Ausstellung geboren. Für diese Künstler*innen zählt die Verarbeitung und der Umgang mit Datenmaterial zu den Grundlagen ihrer Praxis. Die aktuelle Ausstellung präsentiert ein Spektrum an künstlerischen Positionen, darunter Arbeiten der jüngsten Zeit sowie neu beauftragte Werke in unterschiedlichen Medien (von Skulptur und Malerei bis zu Video und Performance und vom unverkennbar Materiellen bis zum ganz und gar Immateriellen). Damit ermöglicht sie einen Überblick auf einige der vielversprechendsten und herausforderndsten Arbeitsweisen, die sich heute mit Daten, Technik und Information auseinandersetzen.

INFORMATION (Today) ist von der Kunsthalle Basel produziert, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo, wo die Ausstellung vom 3. Februar bis 24. Mai 2022 zu sehen ist.
