Erin Shirreff versteht sich selbst nicht als Fotografin, wenn man sie darauf anspricht, auch wenn das fotografische Bild im Mittelpunkt ihrer künstlerischen Praxis steht. Vor allem bekannt für ihre fotografischen und filmischen Arbeiten, ist Shirreff Teil einer Generation von jungen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern deren Überlegungen zu Fotografie das Medium wiederbelebt haben, jedoch ohne Fotografie in einem klassischen Sinne zu betreiben. Auch wenn in ihrer Arbeit kunsthistorische Referenzen reichlich vorhanden sind (wie zu Donald Judd und Tony Smith in zwei Werken in der Kunsthalle Basel Ausstellung oder zu Medardo Rosso und anderen in früheren Arbeiten), geht es ihr in den daraus entstehenden Bildern, ob in den Standbildaufnahmen oder den bewegten, selten „um“ diese offensichtlichen Referenzen. Vielmehr vertiefen sie die leidigen Fragen danach welchen Sinn Bilder für uns haben und was sie bedeuten, als auch wie wir die Distanz zwischen Objekt und dessen fotografischer Repräsentation oder die zwischen der fotografischen Repräsentation und der Erinnerung an das Repräsentierte wahren. Ihre Ausstellung Halves and Wholes in der Kunsthalle Basel ist die erste Einzelausstellung der kanadischen Künstlerin in einer europäischen Institution.
